National Association of Black Military Women Brooklyn Chapter

Overview

The National Association of Black Military Women (NABMW) Brooklyn Chapter is a part of the national organization, the National Association of Black Military Women. This chapter was officially established on February 17, 2017. The chapter focuses on collecting, preserving, and sharing the stories of African American women who have served in the U.S. military, from World War II to present-day conflicts.

Mission

The mission of the NABMW, including its Brooklyn chapter, revolves around the concept of "HERSTORY," which involves the collection and preservation of oral, written, recorded, and filmed stories of African Americans in military service. Membership and Outreach

While the organization is specifically named for Black military women, it welcomes all military women. Additionally, it includes associate members of both genders, regardless of race, religion, gender, or ethnic background. This inclusive approach ensures a diverse membership and support base.

As a part of the larger NABMW organization, which was founded in 1976 by a group of 21 women in Hampton, Virginia, the Brooklyn chapter contributes to a national network of chapters. Other chapters exist across the U.S., including in major cities like Atlanta, New York City, Los Angeles, and more recently established chapters in various Texas cities and Southern New Jersey.
