National Society Daughters of the American Colonists

The National Society Daughters of the American Colonists (NSDAC) is a patriotic organization founded on December 9, 1920, by Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell Guernsey in St. Louis. It was incorporated on April 25, 1921, and received a federal charter as Public Law 98-561 on October 30, 1984.

Mission and Objectives

The object of the NSDAC is to be patriotic, historical, and educational. It aims to research and preserve the history and deeds of American colonists, record and publish them, commemorate deeds of colonial interest, and foster love of America and its institutions. Additionally, the society seeks to promote obedience to the laws of the U.S. and veneration of its flag.

Membership and Eligibility

Membership in the NSDAC is open to American women aged 18 and older who are lineal descendants of someone who rendered civil or military service in one of the original Thirteen Colonies before July 4, 1776.

Notable members have included Denise Doring VanBuren, Ruth Coltrane Cannon, Margaret Wootten Collier, Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell Guernsey, Kitty O'Brien Joyner, Almyra Maynard Watson, Edith Wire, Grace Steele Woodward, and Lynn Forney Young.

Publications and Activities

The NSDAC publishes a magazine, The Colonial Courier, three times a year, which covers chapter and state activities along with historical and genealogical topics. The society also produces a comprehensive Yearbook annually, detailing national and state officers, bylaws, and reports.

Structure and Leadership

The organization is led by a National President and an Executive Committee, which includes national officers and honorary members. The National Board meets regularly and is responsible for policy-making. The society is organized into chapters, state societies, and five geographical sections.

Affiliations

The NSDAC has an affiliation with the National Society Sons of the American Colonists.

Motto and Symbols

The motto of the NSDAC is Past, Present, Future. The theme is Working together to promote lifelong learning. The organizational colors are Colonial Blue & Yellow, and the emblem is the Oak Leaf. The seal features an oak tree surrounded by a wreath of acorns and oak leaves.

Lineage Books

NSDAC publishes Lineage Books that document the colonial services of members' ancestors. These books are compiled after every 1,000 applications are approved.
