Broadcast Legends
Overview
Broadcast Legends is a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating and preserving the history of broadcasting, particularly focusing on the contributions and experiences of individuals in the radio and television industries. Originally established as an independent entity, Broadcast Legends has transitioned to become a program under the California Historical Radio Society (CHRS) as of January 2025, following 35 years of independent operation.
History
Founded in the early 1990s, Broadcast Legends aimed to create a social organization for broadcasters in the Bay Area, fostering a sense of community among those who have shaped the industry. The group held numerous events, celebrating the achievements of radio and television professionals and providing platforms for networking and collaboration. Their motto is "To celebrate with colleagues from the years when broadcasting was fun!"
In January 2025, the board of directors made the decision to integrate Broadcast Legends into CHRS, a move intended to enhance the organization's capacity to continue its mission while benefiting from CHRS's resources and network. The transition was described as a natural evolution, allowing Broadcast Legends to maintain its focus on engaging broadcasters while expanding its reach and impact within the historical broadcasting community.
Programs and Activities
Broadcast Legends hosts various events throughout the year, including:
-
Legends Events: Regular gatherings that feature speakers from the broadcasting community, providing insights and stories from both past and current industry figures.
-
Recognition Programs: Events to honor significant contributions in broadcasting, such as the "Legendary Station" award and the annual "Women in Broadcasting" event.
-
Educational Activities: Focused on preserving the rich history of broadcasting through storytelling, interviews, and public forums, often involving participation from alumni and historical figures in the industry.
The organization continues to collaborate with the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame (BARHOF) and other programs under CHRS, enhancing its commitment to celebrating the legacy of broadcasting.
Legacy and Impact
Broadcast Legends has played an essential role in preserving the history and culture of the broadcasting field, focusing on camaraderie and shared experiences among broadcasters. By transitioning to CHRS, the organization aims to ensure that its legacy continues, adapting to new challenges while keeping the spirit of broadcasting alive. This integration is expected to enrich the resources available to members and expand the opportunities for community engagement through broadcasting history.
Conclusion
As part of CHRS, Broadcast Legends continues to honor the past and present of broadcasting, inviting new members and audiences to participate in its ongoing narrative. By fostering educational initiatives and celebratory events, it aims to keep the memories and achievements of the broadcasting community alive for future generations.
