Little League Baseball Inc.

Overview

Little League Baseball Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and developing youth baseball and softball programs, fostering qualities of citizenship, discipline, teamwork, and physical well-being in children. Founded in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in 1939 by Carl E. Stotz, it is recognized as the first organized youth sports program in the world.

History

In the early 1930s, Carl Stotz began experimenting with organized baseball for children in his neighborhood. This led to the creation of a three-team league in 1939, with the first game played on June 6, 1939, between the Lundy Lumber, Lycoming Dairy, and Jumbo Pretzel teams. Initially sponsored by local businesses for $30 each, the league aimed to provide a structured and wholesome environment for children to learn sportsmanship and teamwork.

Mission and Structure

Little League Baseball Inc. is structured with local leagues operating at the community level, each establishing its own boundaries to ensure participation by local children. These leagues are supported by District Administrators who oversee several leagues and report to Regional Directors. The organization operates under a non-profit membership model, providing resources and support for volunteer-run local programs.

The mission of Little League is to develop character, courage, and loyalty in its participants, focusing on building superior citizens rather than superior athletes. It offers programs for children aged 4 to 16, providing opportunities for development and growth in various countries around the world.

Activities and Programs

Little League offers several divisions, including Little League Baseball, Little League Softball, and the Little League Challenger Division for children with disabilities. The organization also provides educational resources through initiatives like Little League University, aiming to enhance coaching and volunteer skills.

By emphasizing teamwork and fair play, Little League seeks to create a positive impact on communities and individuals beyond the sports field. Through its programs, it promotes fun, belonging, and learning opportunities for children and volunteers alike.

Legal Status

Little League Baseball Inc. is a tax-exempt organization with a federal charter granted by the U.S. Congress in 1964. It operates under the EIN 911927952.
