Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA)
Overview
The Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) is a construction workers' union in the United States and Canada. It was established in 1903 with the aim of consolidating power and improving working conditions for laborers. Today, LIUNA is one of the most significant unions in North America, advocating for the rights and interests of its members.
History
Early Years (1900s–1920)
The origins of LIUNA date back to local construction unions that emerged across the United States in the late 19th century. On April 13, 1903, the International Hod Carriers and Building Laborers' Union (IHC and BLC) was founded in Washington, D.C., under the leadership of Samuel Gompers, the president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). This initial union had delegates from 23 unions in 17 different cities. In 1912, the union underwent two name changes, becoming first the International Hod Carriers and Common Laborers of America and then the International Hod Carriers' Building and Common Laborers of America. By 1920, the union had grown significantly, with membership reaching approximately 96,000.
Growth and Milestones (1920–1980)
The Great Depression saw significant declines in membership and wages, but the union continued to expand its jurisdiction through mergers. During World War II, LIUNA supported national defense efforts and experienced rapid membership growth due to increased construction demands. Notable milestones include affiliations with new groups in the 1950s and the establishment of safety initiatives in the 1960s. The union was renamed the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) in 1965, marking a significant rebranding effort.
Civil Rights and Beyond (1960s–2000s)
In the Civil Rights Era, LIUNA actively supported anti-discrimination policies and participated in important civil rights events. The union continued to push for improved worker conditions, education, and benefits throughout the 1970s. In the 2000s, LIUNA underwent significant leadership changes and organizational shifts, including leaving the AFL-CIO to join the Change to Win Federation before rejoining the AFL-CIO in 2010.
Structure and Activities
LIUNA is structured into multiple regions, each further divided into numerous local unions. As of recent reports, LIUNA has approximately 500,000 members across North America, with a significant presence in both the United States and Canada. The union focuses on political engagement through its Laborers' Political League and offers various benefits, including healthcare, pensions, and legal services to its members.
Leadership
The current leadership includes a General President, who is responsible for guiding the union's overall strategy and direction. Past notable leaders have included Herman Lilien, Domenico D'Alessandro, and more recently, Terence M. O'Sullivan and Brent Booker.
Current Activities and Impact
Today, LIUNA remains a key player in North American labor, advocating for workers' rights, improved working conditions, and comprehensive benefits. Its efforts extend beyond traditional construction sectors to include advocacy in government policies affecting labor and infrastructure development.
