Description

Greater Culver Lake Watershed Conservation Foundation

The Greater Culver Lake Watershed Conservation Foundation (GCLWCF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the environment within the Greater Culver Lake Watershed in New Jersey. The foundation's mission includes protecting the waters, preserving land, and advocating for environmental causes.

Objectives

  • Protect the Waters: The GCLWCF works to improve and maintain the water quality in Culver Lake and Lake Owassa by addressing issues such as phosphorus inflow that can lead to harmful algae blooms.
  • Preserve Land: The organization focuses on creating open spaces for public use and reforestation to mitigate climate change effects and enhance biodiversity.
  • Advocate for the Environment: Through education and community engagement, GCLWCF aims to foster positive environmental awareness and action.

Projects and Achievements

  • Land Conservation: In 2025, the GCLWCF announced the preservation of 268 acres of land in Frankford Township, Sussex County. This includes the former Culver Lake Golf Course, now known as Culver Brook Preserve, and an adjacent forested parcel, Culver Brook Preserve East. These preserves will protect natural resources, enhance habitat for endangered species, and provide public recreational spaces.
  • Rain Gardens and Storm Drain Management: Partnering with local organizations, GCLWCF has implemented rain gardens and storm drain management systems to reduce phosphorus runoff.
  • Alum Injection Stations: To further mitigate phosphorus inflow, the foundation has installed alum injection stations.
  • Webinars and Education: It hosts webinars and educational seminars to promote environmental best practices.

Funding and Partnerships

GCLWCF relies on private tax-deductible donations. It collaborates with local organizations and government agencies, such as the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, to secure funding for its projects. Significant grants have been provided by the New Jersey Green Acres Program and the Open Space Institute’s Delaware River Watershed Protection Fund, among others.

Impact and Community Role

The foundation's efforts contribute to improving water quality in the Delaware River watershed, which provides drinking water for millions. Its work supports wildlife conservation and offers recreational spaces, enhancing the quality of life for local residents and visitors.
