Description

The Armory Foundation

The Armory Foundation is a nonprofit organization located in New York City, operating the historic Fort Washington Avenue Armory. Established in 1992 by Dr. Norbert Sander Jr., the organization is dedicated to promoting fitness and education for youth through various athletic, educational, and community programs[1][4].

History

Dr. Norbert Sander Jr., an internist and winner of the 1974 New York City Marathon, founded The Armory Foundation. Sander led efforts to renovate the Armory, which had fallen into disrepair in the 1980s. Through securing over $25 million in funding, the facility underwent significant refurbishments, including the installation of a modern banked track and a learning center. Sander continued to lead the foundation until his death in 2017. The organization is now led by Co-Presidents Rita Finkel and Jonathan Schindel[1].

Programs

The Armory is renowned as the world's premier indoor track and field facility, hosting over 100 competitions annually, including the prestigious Millrose Games. This venue is home to more track & field records than any other facility in the world[1][3].

Educational Programs

  • Armory College Prep: This program offers rigorous academics, test preparation, and college counseling to high school students from underserved communities. Over the past four years, all high school seniors in the program have been admitted to four-year colleges, receiving substantial scholarships covering over 70% of their full tuition[1][3].

  • Middle School Programs: These programs provide instruction in math, robotics, video game design, and reading for students in the Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem communities. Students and their families receive guidance to navigate New York City's complex high school admissions process[1].

  • Great Minds Program: Targeted at fifth-grade students, this program focuses on reading and robotics to enhance early educational development[1].

Youth Fitness Programs

  • Tiny Feet, Little Feet, and CityTrack: These programs offer no-cost fitness and introductory track & field training to children from grades 2 through 8. Experienced coaches oversee these programs, promoting lifelong engagement with exercise and healthy lifestyles[1].

Governance and Funding

The Armory Foundation is governed by a diverse board of directors, which includes members from various professional backgrounds. The organization conducts formal orientations for new board members and ensures a transparent conflict-of-interest policy[2].

Funding for The Armory Foundation comes from a combination of City grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual donations[1]. Spaces within the facility are available for rentals, supporting the continuation of its programs[3].

Facilities

The Armory is a modernized four-story building featuring multiple event spaces, including a 65,000-square-foot arena, nearly 3,000 balcony seats, an in-house café, and a 69-seat theater. Its versatile spaces accommodate a variety of community and special events, enhancing its role as a vibrant cultural hub in New York City[1].
