Description

Crispus Attucks Charter School

Crispus Attucks Charter School is a nonprofit organization based in York, Pennsylvania, and operates as a YouthBuild-affiliated high school diploma program. The school focuses on providing hands-on job training and service learning for students aged 17 to 21, particularly those who have not experienced success in previous educational settings.

History

The Crispus Attucks Charter School was established in 1994, modeled after the YouthBuild program. It received charter school status approval in May 1999, becoming the first charter school in York City.

Mission and Programs

The mission of the school is to prepare students to become mentally tough by accepting responsibility for themselves. It aims to develop self-esteem, self-respect, and respect for others while promoting academics, leadership, and career skills. The school transforms students into productive and respectable citizens through its programs. Students alternate between classroom learning and service sites, where they participate in rehabilitating low-income housing as part of the YouthBuild affiliation. This service earns them AmeriCorps hours, which provide financial support for post-secondary education.

Educational Approach

The school emphasizes long-term skills development by maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. It provides pupil-centered education to empower students to become effective learners. The curriculum includes core subjects, art, technical education using a Department of Labor (DOL) curriculum, and a senior project that helps students transition to life after high school. Class sizes are kept small, with no more than 15 students, to ensure personalized attention.

Community Impact

As a member of the YouthBuild USA Affiliated Network and the AmeriCorps National Service Movement, the school is committed to improving the community and enhancing the quality of life for York residents. Students contribute to building affordable housing for low-income families, promoting community improvement and personal growth.

Achievements

In the 2022-2023 academic year, an impressive 97% of graduates obtained Pre-Apprenticeship certification through the Home Builders Institute (HBI PACT), marking the highest level of certifications achieved by the school to date. All enrolled students participate in construction training, which is integral to the YouthBuild model of education.
