Key Club International
Key Club International is an international student-led service organization for high school students, originating in Sacramento, California, on May 7, 1925. The organization was founded by California State Commissioner of Schools Albert C. Olney and vocational education teacher Frank C. Vincent in response to the need for positive youth engagement through community service. Today, Key Club is recognized as the oldest and largest high school service organization globally, with a membership encompassing thousands of clubs across multiple countries.
History
Key Club began with a single chapter at Sacramento High School and rapidly expanded over the following decades. In 1939, the first district was established in Florida, leading to the organization's international designation in 1943. The first Key Club outside North America was founded in the Bahamas in 1963. Gender inclusivity was enhanced in 1977 when female students were first admitted to Key Club, a decade before women joined Kiwanis International, Key Club's parent organization.
Key Club has played a significant role in addressing global issues, raising over $1.2 million in 1998 to combat iodine deficiency disorders and more than $1.3 million in 2008 for HIV/AIDS initiatives in Swaziland. With approximately 5,000 clubs in 35 countries, Key Club members collectively contribute over 12 million hours of community service annually.
