Wheatland Rural Electric Association

Wheatland Rural Electric Association (WREA) is a nonprofit electric cooperative based in Wyoming. It is classified as a 501(c)(12) organization, designated for entities like benevolent life insurance associations and telephone companies that have a mutually beneficial nature.

History

Established on December 29, 1936, by a group of rural residents aiming to improve their living standards by obtaining electricity, similar to those in urban areas. The association's first contract for power was signed with the town of Wheatland on April 8, 1937. By the end of 1937, WREA had built 60 miles of primary line and had 75 customers. Since its inception, it has grown to maintain over 1800 miles of line, serving nearly 2000 members across various counties in Wyoming.

WREA operates as a democratic, tax-paying, not-for-profit business governed by a member-elected board of directors. As a member-owned utility, it provides electricity and other services to its member-owners. WREA is integral to community service, participating in economic development efforts and charitable activities.
