The mission of Coalition Legal is to provide greater access to employment and housing for indigent Lake County residents whose old criminal records are holding them back. We offer free legal advice to help people determine if their records are eligible, complete the paperwork, and present them in Lake County expungement court for their hearing. By expunging and sealing eligible criminal records, Coalition Legal helps people move beyond their past mistakes and achieve their full potential--good paying jobs, better housing, and a shot at the American dream. 85% of our clients are African American or Hispanic, and 71% of our clients receive free filing because they are below the poverty line or receive a public benefit.

Coalition Legal helps people expunge or seal eligible criminal records as authorized by Illinois law so they can reintegrate back into society and gain access to employment stable housing and more. There is an enormous untapped pool of people who are entitled to have their records sealed or expunged but do not have the funds for it are afraid to ask for it or do not know they are entitled to it. We are here to help put them on the path to stability.
