For too long, the misconception that women can’t have hemophilia has led to underdiagnosis and insufficient care, leaving countless women and girls without the treatment they deserve. Thankfully, the medical community is finally beginning to acknowledge that women with factor levels below 40% should be diagnosed and treated as having hemophilia—not merely labeled as “symptomatic carriers.” In our latest newsletter, we feature an important article by G Shellye Horowitz, originally published in Hemophilia News Today, that sheds light on this critical issue. We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Caleb Spater, a dedicated and passionate advocate in our community. Caleb was driven by the belief that his voice could create meaningful change for those with bleeding disorders, as he spent time raising awareness and advocating on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, at the State House in Boston, and even with his mayor’s office in Cambridge. His determination and commitment leave a lasting legacy and will continue to inspire all of us who carry on this important work. The family is doing a private memorial service.
