National Association for Black Veterans, Inc.
The National Association for Black Veterans, Inc. (NABVETS) is a nationally certified Veterans Service Organization and a United States Department of Veterans Affairs claims representative. It was originally founded as the Interested Veterans of the Central City (IVOCC) in 1969 by seven Vietnam combat veterans in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and reorganized as NABVETS in 1973[1][5].
Mission and Vision
NABVETS' mission includes strategic advocacy for its members with Congress and various federal and state agencies, providing personal advocacy for all veterans seeking claims against the Department of Veterans Affairs. The organization also focuses on community involvement, preserving historical records of minority veterans, and empowering low-income and minority veterans[1][2].
The organization envisions becoming the premier professional organization representing Black veterans worldwide, aiming to establish chapters in every city with a population exceeding 250,000 and serving 50% of the national Black veteran population[1][4].
Services and Activities
NABVETS offers a wide range of services, including assistance with VA claims, empowerment training, and collaborative partnerships to address homelessness and economic disadvantages among veterans[1][4]. They also focus on providing holistic support for health, housing, rehabilitation, and education, as well as assisting incarcerated veterans and promoting youth development[5].
History
NABVETS has been a leader in addressing concerns for minority and low-income veterans for over four decades. It was certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1998 to assist with claims under VA laws[1][3]. Today, NABVETS has chapters across the United States and internationally, including Puerto Rico[5].
Structure
NABVETS is structured with state commands and chapters across multiple regions. It partners with community-based organizations and government agencies to achieve its objectives[4]. Despite its name, NABVETS serves all veterans regardless of race or nationality[3].
