SUPPORT THE ADVANCEMENT AND EDUCATION OF INDIVIDUALS BY PROVIDING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, OR OTHER NON-PROFIT EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WITH A FACILITY FOR INDIVIDUALS TO LEARN TO USE SUCH COMPUTER EQUIPMENT.

Technology Education Foundation Inc.
Overview

The Technology Education Foundation Inc., commonly abbreviated as TEF, is a U.S. nonprofit organization established in 2004 by Jim Berbee, the founder of Berbee Information Networks Corporation (now known as CDW). Its mission is to support the advancement and education of individuals by providing information technology hardware and software to public schools, libraries, and other community organizations. This effort aims to close the technology gap by ensuring that people of all ages have access to technology resources and education.

Funding and Grants

TEF has provided substantial financial support to the community through grants. Since its inception, it has awarded over $1.6 million in technology education grants. In 2019 alone, more than $97,000 in grants were distributed. These grants have benefited approximately 188 organizations, helping them enhance technology education among children, teens, and adults of all abilities.

The Berbee Derby

A significant source of funding for TEF was the Berbee Derby, a Thanksgiving Day 5K and 10K run/walk event. The Derby was a Madison tradition that ran for 20 years until its final event in 2023. 100% of the proceeds from the Berbee Derby went to TEF, supporting its mission to promote technology education in the community.

Future Developments

With the conclusion of the Berbee Derby, TEF has transitioned its assets to the Madison Community Foundation (MCF). This strategic move will allow TEF to continue its mission by providing "field of interest" grants in perpetuity through MCF. This change ensures that technology education grants will continue to be available to organizations in need, supporting educational technology initiatives throughout the community.

Impact and Legacy

The Technology Education Foundation has made a lasting impact in Dane County and the greater Madison area. By bridging the technology gap, TEF has contributed to creating a more inclusive and technologically equipped community. Its commitment to technology education aligns with the rapidly evolving digital landscape, ensuring that residents have the necessary skills and resources to thrive in a technological society.
