Description

American Volkssport Association

The American Volkssport Association (AVA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States. It serves as an umbrella organization for a grassroots network of sports clubs, promoting noncompetitive sporting events focused on fitness, fun, and friendship for all ages and abilities.

Origins

Volkssporting, which translates to "the sport of the people" in German, originated in Europe in the mid-1960s. The concept evolved from competitive public races into a noncompetitive activity where everyone could participate and be considered a winner. This movement was formalized in 1968 by several German, Swiss, Austrian, and Liechtenstein clubs, eventually becoming the Internationaler Volkssportverband e.V. (IVV)[1].

Introduction to the United States

Volkssporting was introduced to the United States in 1976 by Rev. Mr. Kenn Knopp, who was inspired by his visit to Germany. The first American event took place in Fredericksburg, Texas, in June of that year. Initially organized under the name International Federation of Peoples' Sports-USA (IFP-USA), it later became known as the American Volkssport Association (AVA) during the first national convention in Dayton, Ohio, in 1979[1].

Mission and Activities

The AVA is dedicated to promoting regular physical fitness as a key component of good health. Its mission aligns with that of the IVV, focusing on family fitness and community involvement through sanctioned noncompetitive events. These events include walking, hiking, cycling, swimming, and in some areas, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The most popular activity is walking, with trails typically offering either 5 or 10 kilometers (3.1 or 6.2 miles) routes[2][3].

Structure and Events

The AVA oversees more than 350 active clubs across the United States, hosting over 3,000 events annually[4][5]. Local clubs often collaborate with youth and community groups to organize these events, which are open to all ages and abilities. A small participation fee is required, with additional options for enrolling in the International Achievement Awards Program or purchasing event mementos[4][5].

The organization is managed by an elected volunteer National Executive Council and a paid staff. It operates under a non-profit model, relying on member support and donations to facilitate its activities[3].

Participation and Benefits

Participation in AVA events is not limited to members; local club or national membership is optional but recommended. The events themselves are designed to be enjoyable, offering scenic routes and a stress-free environment. Many participants continue beyond initial fitness goals due to the social benefits and friendships formed through local clubs[3][5].

Achievement Awards Program

The AVA offers an Achievement Awards Program, allowing participants to track their progress by purchasing record books that are stamped at each completed event. Upon achieving certain milestones, participants can earn patches, pins, and certificates, providing a motivating incentive to continue their volkssporting activities[3].
