JustFund

JustFund is a nonprofit organization in the United States that operates as a digital grantmaking platform. Founded in 2017 by Lara Peng, it is a project of the Solidaire Network, a left-of-center organization focused on progressive political advocacy.

Background and Mission

JustFund was created to streamline the grantmaking process by connecting left-progressive foundations with potential grantees. The platform aims to simplify and expedite the funding process, focusing on equity, trust, and transparency. It targets left-progressive organizations and campaigns, particularly those led by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities. The mission is to support under-resourced groups often excluded from traditional philanthropy by simplifying and democratizing access to funding.

Services and Technology

JustFund offers a common grant application system, which was the first such solution in the United States. This platform significantly reduces the time and resources required for nonprofits to apply for funding. Traditionally, grant applications can take between 15 to 40 hours, costing organizations substantial time and money. By using JustFund's common application process, organizations can save thousands of hours annually, focusing instead on their core mission.

The platform also provides premium services for foundation members, including administrative, management, and consulting support, largely through partnerships with organizations like the Amalgamated Charitable Foundation. JustFund facilitates the listing of grant opportunities and allows for the endorsement of organizations, ensuring that funders can quickly and effectively allocate resources to vetted recipients.

Partnerships and Impact

Since its inception, JustFund has partnered with several prominent foundations, including the Ford Foundation, East Bay Community Foundation, The Emergent Fund, and Amplify Fund. By 2021, the platform had helped disburse over $83 million in grants, and by 2024, this figure had grown to nearly $320 million. JustFund's work has been recognized and supported by major philanthropic organizations, such as the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, which awarded $2 million to enhance its role in equitable grantmaking.

Leadership

Lara Peng serves as the founder and CEO of JustFund. She has been instrumental in starting several left-progressive initiatives, including Young People For and the Emergent Fund. Melody Lee acts as the managing director and has cofounded other progressive groups.
