The North Montrose Civic Association Inc is a nonprofit civic organization based in Houston, Texas. Established on July 24, 1980, the association was formed to promote civic affairs and community welfare within the North Montrose neighborhood.

History

The idea for the North Montrose Civic Association (NMCA) originated from community meetings in June 1980, following resident interest in creating a neighborhood civic club. The organizational meeting took place at the old YWCA building on Allen Parkway, where the association formally adopted bylaws, elected officers, and set membership dues. Larry Albertelli, a local resident and freelance writer, was selected as the first president.

The initial major project of NMCA was a comprehensive heavy trash removal campaign during a hot August in 1980, covering the entire neighborhood. This effort fostered community involvement and began the tradition of communal activities centered around service and social events. The first annual meeting and elections were held that November, and by the end of 1980, the association had 99 charter members.

Mission and Activities

NMCA's mission is to improve the quality of life in North Montrose by encouraging active participation in civic matters. It operates as a voluntary membership organization, with dues supporting neighborhood projects and advocacy efforts.

The association's geographical boundaries span from Allen Parkway to West Gray/Peden on the north and south, and from Shepherd Drive to Taft Street on the east and west, making it the largest civic association by area in Houston.

NMCA hosts five meetings annually, featuring guest speakers who address topics such as infrastructure, city regulations, traffic and safety, real estate development, and cultural events within the neighborhood. The association maintains communication with members through a monthly newsletter and organizes yearly social events, including participation in National Night Out, to foster community spirit.

Governance and Membership

NMCA is governed by elected officers and supported by volunteers who contribute to its numerous civic and social initiatives. Membership is open to residents and associate members, with an emphasis on active participation rather than mandatory dues.

Significance

For over four decades, the North Montrose Civic Association has played a vital role in representing the interests of its residents, promoting neighborhood safety, cultural enrichment, and community engagement. Its sustained efforts have helped shape North Montrose into a vibrant and cohesive community within Houston.
