Free & Accepted Masons of Washington
The Free & Accepted Masons of Washington, often referred to as the Grand Lodge of Washington, is a prominent fraternal organization founded in 1858. It originated when four lodges in the Washington Territory obtained a charter from the Grand Lodge of Oregon, about 31 years prior to Washington achieving statehood. The founding lodges include Olympia Lodge No. 1, Steilacoom Lodge No. 2, Grand Mound Lodge No. 3, and Washington Lodge No. 4.
History
The establishment of Freemasonry in the Washington Territory can be traced back to the mid-19th century. As the territory evolved, so did the need for a centralized governing body for the Masonic lodges. Thus, on December 8, 1858, the Grand Lodge of Washington was officially formed. This organization was tasked with overseeing Masonic activity across the region, promoting the values of brotherhood, charity, and self-improvement.
Throughout its history, the Grand Lodge of Washington has been involved in various charitable efforts, including educational scholarships, disaster relief, and community programs. In 2013, the Grand Lodge moved to a new building in University Place, which houses its offices, library, and museum, further solidifying its commitment to serving the community.
Philanthropy and Community Involvement
The Free & Accepted Masons of Washington actively engages in philanthropic endeavors. These initiatives include support for local charities, educational scholarships, and programs that promote literacy and disaster relief within the community. The Masonic lodges have a longstanding tradition of participating in local civic activities, fostering community spirit, and providing assistance to those in need.
Membership and Structure
The Grand Lodge of Washington is composed of more than 169 local lodges, boasting a membership of over 12,000 individuals. Membership is open to men of good moral character who are interested in self-improvement and the betterment of their communities. The organization prides itself on inclusivity and diversity among its members. Prominent historical figures, including notable politicians and civic leaders from Washington State, have been affiliated with the Masons, highlighting the organization's influence and standing in society.
Today, the Grand Lodge is overseen by the Grand Master and a group of elected officials who manage the activities and governance of the lodges under its jurisdiction. The organization continues to promote Masonic values and enrich the lives of its members and the communities they serve.
