Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks of the USA

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), commonly referred to as the Elks Lodge, is a prominent American fraternal organization and charitable body. Founded in 1868 in New York City, it originally served as a social club for minstrel show performers but evolved into a nationwide brotherhood focused on community service, patriotism, and mutual aid.

History

Established by actor Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian on February 16, 1868, the organization began as the "Jolly Corks," a group of actors meeting on Sundays due to New York's blue laws. Following a tragic event where a member died, leaving his family destitute, the group adopted a more noble purpose and reformed into the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. By 1890, it had expanded to include 173 lodges across the United States.

Principles and Activities

The BPOE upholds four core principles: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. It supports numerous philanthropic programs, including scholarships for youth, programs for veterans, and disaster relief efforts. The organization is also known for its patriotic activities, such as conducting bond drives and promoting civil defense programs.

Membership

Membership is open to all U.S. citizens over 21 who affirm a belief in God and are of good character. Historically exclusive, the BPOE began admitting women in 1995 and African Americans in 1972.

Structure and Governance

Each local lodge is governed by an Exalted Ruler, and the national leadership includes the Grand Exalted Ruler. The headquarters, the Elks National Veterans Memorial, is located in Chicago, Illinois.

Legacy and Impact

With over 750,000 members across more than 1,900 lodges, the Elks are a significant presence in American community life. Their contributions include donations to veterans hospitals, various youth programs like the popular "Hoop Shoot" contest, and extensive community service activities. Despite its vast impact, the Elks have traditionally avoided seeking public recognition, focusing instead on performing quiet acts of charity and service.
