"My Research Operations Internship at the Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO) afforded me valuable professional experience and a sense of purpose. During my time at LEO, I had the opportunity to hone my research skills while working on initiatives aimed at improving social assistance programs. This work was meaningful, as it directly supported efforts to elevate individuals and families out of poverty. By analyzing data, identifying gaps, and proposing evidence-based solutions I contributed to projects that sought to create more equitable and effective support systems. This year's Up to Us Leadership Bootcamp gathered 100 student leaders from across the nation in Washington, D.C. to build their fiscal knowledge, elevate their leadership skills, and craft public policy solutions, all while strengthening community and connecting with changemakers. Participants engaged with over 20 different guest speakers through various panels and presentations that made inspiring connections between fiscal and public policy, civic leadership, and bipartisanship. We had guests from the Urban Institute, the Bipartisan Policy Center, the DC Mayor's Office, and so much more! Through a 24-hour Policy Sprint, students worked in small teams to develop policy solutions with a fiscal lens addressing some of today's most pressing issues, including climate and energy innovation, healthcare programs, and higher education access.
