Project OneTen

Overview Project OneTen is a U.S. nonprofit organization aimed at supporting Black and Brown boys during their critical transition to high school. The organization believes that leaders are built, not born, and focuses on providing targeted coaching, a research-based curriculum, and a supportive community to foster leadership and academic success.

Mission and Vision The mission of Project OneTen is to create intentional spaces for Black and Brown boys through mentorship and peer-to-peer community building. This approach helps them cultivate their strengths and unique identities, laying a foundation for success in high school and beyond. The organization envisions a Chicago community where all Black and Brown boys have access to the tools, resources, and supportive adults necessary to self-determine their futures.

Programs and Activities Project OneTen offers holistic programming, focusing on the critical transition period to high school. Their programs include targeted coaching and a research-based curriculum designed to help students achieve academic success. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization adapted by offering Student Self Care Micro Grants in partnership with the Chicago Bulls and Thrive Chicago, providing support for mental health and well-being.

Impact and Funding In its first year, Project OneTen raised over $10,000 from its community and established notable partnerships. After a brief pause due to the pandemic, the organization relaunched in 2022 with significant investments from partners like NewSchools, allowing them to expand their programming and hire staff. Project OneTen aims to impact over 200 students annually and engage over 100 volunteer mentors, significantly enhancing academic achievement for boys of color in Chicago.

History Founded in 2019, Project OneTen has evolved to become a vital resource for Chicago's Black and Brown boys. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has continued to grow and expand its reach through strategic partnerships and investments. As it celebrates its fifth year, Project OneTen remains committed to its mission of empowering young leaders and fostering academic success.

We Believe Leaders are Built Not Born. Our Vision We envision a Chicago community in which all Black and Brown boys have access to the tools resources and supportive adults to self determine their futures. We believe young people already possess the unique skills talents and perspectives to be leaders on campus and beyond. Our program simply provides them the space and tools to identify and activate these qualities.
