Arizona State Poetry Society
The Arizona State Poetry Society (ASPS) is a non-profit educational and literary organization dedicated to promoting the art of poetry. Established in 1966, it operates as a 501(c)(3) charity.
History
ASPS was founded by Mabelle Lyon and Gladys Bagley Schaefer, initially as the Phoenix Poetry Society. In 1968, it expanded to become the Arizona State Poetry Society, allowing it to join the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS). The organization has grown over the years, establishing branches across Arizona, including the Tucson Poetry Society, which became the second branch in 1969.
Mission and Vision
The ASPS mission focuses on promoting the reading, appreciation, writing, and speaking of poetry at both state and local levels. This is achieved through various community outreach programs, including public meetings, readings, workshops, and education initiatives. The society seeks to unite poets of diverse backgrounds and experiences, fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
Goals
The organization aims to:
- Recruit poets and poetry enthusiasts from all walks of life to join and engage with ASPS activities.
- Collaborate with other literary groups to promote poetry.
- Provide internal critique groups, contests, and educational opportunities for its members.
- Facilitate collaboration on poetry publications among members.
- Host public events, including an annual conference, to promote poetry.
Contests and Programs
ASPS offers several poetry contests throughout the year:
- Annual Contest: Features over 20 categories and is open to both members and non-members, running from June to August annually.
- Member Contests: Held five times a year with categories aimed at ASPS members.
- Youth Contest: Open to students across Arizona, running from February to April each year. Winners receive cash prizes and publication opportunities.
Membership
Membership is open to individuals nationwide, offering benefits such as participation in critique groups, contests, and publishing opportunities.
Publication and Marketplace
The society supports the publication of its members' works and hosts a marketplace where members can display and sell their poetry collections. Notable publications include a range of chapbooks and full-length poetry collections showcasing diverse themes and styles.
