Dutchman's-breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) is a delicate spring ephemeral whose flowers resemble old-fashioned white bloomers hanging upside-down on a wash line. Like other Dicentra species, the foliage of D. cucullaria is delicate and feathery. This surprising little plant forms mats in the early season, which grow, bloom, and begin dying back before most of its summer flowers have gone much past groundbreak. Come marvel at this and other spring ephemerals at Garden in the Woods, our native plant botanic garden in Framingham, MA, when it opens on Sunday, April 13.
