STORY OF RESCUE: Mentes and Marie Mordechai and their five children, Sara, Asher, Shmuel, Rachel, and Yossi lived in Veria, Greece when they were persecuted by the Germans for being Jewish. Evlambia Axiopoulos and Efthimia Gianopoulou, two former employees of the family, heroically saved them, hiding them in an old abandoned Turkish mosque, a two-room apartment, and later in the mountains. The Jews of Veria were rounded by the Germans on May 1, 1943. After their hiding place was revealed, the family overcame numerous obstacles and eventually hid in a pigsty until liberation. The family survived the war thanks in part to the efforts of Evlambia Axiopoulos and Efthimia Gianopoulou. 75 other members of the Mordechai family tragically perished in Auschwitz.
