Parker School
Overview
Parker School is a non-profit, independent, co-educational day school located on the Big Island of Hawai'i. It provides a comprehensive college-preparatory program for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.
History
Established in 1976 by local community leaders, Parker School has been a significant educational resource for over four decades. Initially starting as a high school for grades nine through twelve, the school expanded to include middle school grades in 1977 and eventually added lower school grades. By 2005, it had a complete K-12 program in place.
Accreditation and Programs
Parker School is fully accredited by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). It is divided into three main sections: Lower School (K-5), Middle School (6-8), and Upper School (9-12). The curriculum emphasizes academic excellence, arts, and extracurricular activities, including sports and community service. The Upper School offers numerous honors options and Advanced Placement courses, fostering a rigorous learning environment.
Facilities and Development
The school is currently developing a new 21,000 square foot facility called The SMART Center, which will house sports, mathematics, arts, recreation, and technology programs. This building is named in acknowledgment of Richard Smart, a sixth-generation descendant of Parker Ranch, who played a crucial role in ensuring the school's continuation.
Financial Status
As a nonprofit organization, Parker School relies on contributions, program services, and investment income for its revenue. The school has a strong financial foundation, with total assets valued at over $80 million as of June 2023.
Mission and Values
Parker School's mission is to nurture students with a focus on excellence, integrity, and compassion. It fosters a family-like environment where students are supported and encouraged to reach their full potential.
New Initiatives
The school is launching an Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program to provide high-quality early learning opportunities for children aged 2 to 5. This initiative aims to complement existing early education efforts in the community, reflecting the school's commitment to lifelong learning and community support.
