Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association
The Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, widely known today as the Alzheimer's Association, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to caregiving, support, and research for Alzheimer's disease.
History
The organization was founded in 1980, following a period of growing awareness and advocacy for Alzheimer's disease in the late 1970s. Jerome H. Stone played a pivotal role in its establishment, motivated by his personal experience with his wife's struggle with the disease. Initially, the organization was formed with the help of several family support groups and was incorporated as the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association.
Mission and Activities
The Alzheimer's Association seeks to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through research, care, and support. It provides a wide array of services, including free helplines, online tools, and local support groups to help individuals affected by dementia and their caregivers. The organization is also involved in significant fundraising efforts to advance research and promote awareness about Alzheimer's disease. Events like the Walk to End Alzheimer's and The Longest Day are key components of these efforts.
Impact and Leadership
The Alzheimer's Association is recognized as the largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's research globally. It has chapters across the United States and is known for its impact in driving public policy related to Alzheimer's care and support. The organization's leadership has historically been instrumental in influencing federal policies aimed at combating Alzheimer's disease.
Publications and Research
The Alzheimer's Association publishes Alzheimer's & Dementia, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that serves as a platform for sharing research and insights into Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
Advocacy
The organization advocates for increased investment in Alzheimer's research and improved care through its advocacy arm, the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM). AIM works to advance public policy priorities for the Alzheimer's and dementia community at both federal and state levels.
Transparency
The organization maintains transparency by publicly sharing its governance policies, financial reports, and partnership information.

Mike Hickman is Alzheimer's Impact Movement's May Advocate of the Month. 📣 Mike’s father was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2009 and passed away the following year. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of Mike’s journey. He became and advocate after experiencing friends and other family members face dementia, including his sister who is living with posterior cortical atrophy. Today, Mike’s advocacy work is driven by the importance of early detection and treatment access. “The sooner people will get diagnosed, the sooner we can have treatments for them. That’s not the way it used to be.” Read more of Mike’s story ➡️ bit.ly/43rWgOF. (fb)
