“Forgiveness is the fundamental condition of the reconciliation of the children of God with their Father and of men with one another" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2844). Forgiveness involves one's willing the good of another. However, the Catechism also states, “It is not in our power not to feel or to forget an offense, but the heart that offers itself to the Holy Spirit turns injury to compassion and purifies the memory in transforming the hurt into intercession” (CCC, 2843). Forgiving someone does not mean that we forget what someone has done or allow them to do it again without consequence, but that we do not wish evil upon them for their wrongdoing. We can still feel anger or sadness and not wish to interact with or be around the person who committed the wrongdoing, but we can wish them well and hope and pray that they will amend their ways, even if the person has already died (we can pray for his soul).
