Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA, commonly known as the Elks Lodge or simply The Elks, is a major American fraternal organization and nonprofit organization. Founded on February 16, 1868, in New York City, it originated as a social club for minstrel show performers but evolved into a nationwide brotherhood focused on community service, patriotism, and mutual aid[1][2].

History

The organization began as a group called the "Jolly Corks," consisting of actors and entertainers wishing to continue social gatherings despite New York's blue laws. Following the death of a member who left his family destitute, the group decided to adopt a more noble purpose, leading to the establishment of the Elks Order. The elk, a symbol of strength and majesty, was chosen as the organization's emblem[4].

Pillars and Activity

The Elks Lodge upholds four core pillars: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. It supports numerous philanthropic programs, including scholarships for youth (like the "Hoop Shoot" contest), disaster relief, and veteran support. Traditionally, it observes the "Hour of Recollection" toast, a ritual honoring absent members[2].

Membership and Structure

Historically, the organization was exclusive, but now it welcomes all U.S. citizens over 21 who affirm a belief in God. The Elks have over 750,000 members across more than 1,900 local lodges. The organization's headquarters is located in Chicago, Illinois, where the Elks National Veterans Memorial commemorates members who served in World War I[2].

Colors and Symbolism

The Elks' official colors are Royal Purple and White, and their symbol is the elk. The organization publishes Elks Magazine to keep members informed about national and local activities[2].

Historical Exclusivity

While once restrictive, the BPOE has become more inclusive, opening membership to previously excluded groups in the late 20th century. However, the legacy of exclusivity is also reflected in the formation of parallel organizations, such as the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW), which was established to serve communities barred from the BPOE[5].
