Meet Our Music Director The Venezuelanborn Spanish conductor Jose Luis Gomez began his musical career as a violinist but was catapulted to international attention when he won First Prize at the International Sir Georg Solti Conductors Competition in Frankfurt in September 2010.

Why is Mozart’s Fifth Violin Concerto, to be played by former TSO concertmaster Steven Moeckel on October 11 and 12, called the Turkish. The finale includes exotic instrumentation and ornamental effects imitating the Ottoman Mehterhâne, also known as the Janissary military band. Here’s a depiction in Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace Museum dating from Mozart’s time.

Mozart finished his Turkish Violin Concerto, to be played by the TSO October 11th & 12th, a little before his 20th birthday. The finale begins with an elegant minuet, then suddenly turns to a knavish dance in two. At this moment in Mozart’s autograph score, the orchestra imitates the cymbals and drums of a Turkish military band.
