Coming to the 2025 58th AABP Annual Conference Sept. 11-13 in Omaha? Then take a look at these exciting, in-depth preconference seminars! Find them all at https://aabp.org/meeting/preconference.asp and register for the conference at https://aabp.org/meeting/default.asp. Find the schedule at https://aabp.org/meeting/conference.asp. “Applied Beef Cattle Nutrition” Wednesday, Sept. 10, featuring Drs. Terry Engelken and Garland Dahlke, will be a combination of lecture and case studies discussing beef cow-calf nutrition. Topics include understanding animal requirements and the nutritional calendar, forage testing, the components of a forage analysis and mineral feed tag, and the use of alternative feeds and feeding systems. Case studies involving pregnant cows, early-weaned calves, developing heifers and preconditioning rations for weaned calves will be used. The Beef Ration and Nutrition Decisions Software (BRaNDS) will be used for this seminar and the use of computers is required. “Management and Nutrition of the Dairy Replacement Heifer” will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9 and Wednesday, Sept. 10, and features Drs. Robert Corbett, Sandra Godden and Geoff Smith. This two-day seminar will thoroughly investigate the management of the replacement dairy heifer. Topics include colostrum and maternity pen management, pre- and post-weaning nutrition, vaccination programs and management of key diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia. There will be discussion of specific problems and/or questions from attendees. The seminar is designed for veterinarians involved with dairy farms or calf ranches looking to improve their knowledge about the production of healthy replacement dairy heifers. “Thinking Through and Practicing Lameness Treatment Protocols”, Wednesday, Sept. 10 with Drs. Gerard Cramer and Pierre-Yves Mulon, will engage in interactive discussions of cases and treatment protocols, finding lame cows, then participants will practice on cadaver feet. “Taking Care of Bodybuilders when You're Used to Supermodels: Tactics and Strategies to Build Your Practice when Dairy Clients Convert to Beef” will be held Sept. 10 and features Drs. Becky Funk and Kacie McCarthy. If you are in a dairy-centric practice and have clients who are transitioning to beef production, entering the industry for the first time, or even if you just want to be more relevant to your existing beef clients, this seminar is structured to help you think differently about your existing skills and brush up on skills that you may not have used in a while. Our goal is to help you understand the issues and challenges today's beef clients are facing and equip you with tools to help them meet these challenges and be successful in the industry while continuing to include you as a valued team member on their operation. “Amazing Grazing” will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, and features Drs. Mark Alley, Chris Teutsch, Matt Poore and Mary Drewnoski. Amazing Grazing, the impactful Extension program at NC State University, teaches the principles of adaptive grazing management to diverse audiences. The goal is to build interest in the ecological system, opening the door for effective adaptive management of complex pastureland ecosystems. We will introduce participants to the major ecosystem processes and how they interact to create a successful and regenerative livestock enterprise. “Bovine Reproduction Education and Discussion Workshop” on Wednesday, September 10, will include Drs. Paul Fricke and Richard Pursley. You will: understand the endocrine regulation of the estrous cycle in dairy cows; explain the physiological basis and application of the Ovsynch protocol; evaluate reproductive management scenarios through breakout sessions; identify strategies for managing anovulatory cows and select synchronization protocols; describe the "high fertility cycle" and conception rates; apply evidence-based reproductive programs to enhance first-service pregnancy rates; develop and critically assess comprehensive herd-level reproductive management plans, integrating synchronization, heat detection and resynchronization strategies; and understand the best practices and limitations in using sexed semen, heifer synchronization protocols, and integrating IVP embryos. Food Animal Educators Symposium, Wednesday, Sept. 10. Are you a food animal educator? This afternoon symposium is free and only available to AABP members who are employed in academic settings. Come visit with food animal educators from other veterinary schools and discuss a variety of pertinent topics. #AABP2025 (fb)
