Kitchen Possible Inc
Educating and empowering children in the kitchen.
Kitchen Possible Inc
Overview
Kitchen Possible Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on youth development through cooking education. It was founded by Katie Lowman in 2017 with the mission to build empowered mindsets in children aged eight to twelve from underserved communities in Chicago.
Mission
The mission of Kitchen Possible is to empower kids through cooking, fostering skills that extend beyond the kitchen, such as patience, help-seeking, and goal setting. The organization uses a 5-Step Model in its classes:
- Decide what you want to make
- Get a recipe ready
- Follow it closely
- Check in and edit
- Taste and reflect
This model is designed to be applicable not just to cooking, but to other areas of life, helping children develop life skills and confidence.
Programs
Kitchen Possible offers weekly cooking lessons in under-resourced neighborhoods, currently including Pilsen, East Garfield Park, and South Austin. Each eight-week session provides hands-on learning experiences, incorporating life lessons into cooking activities. The organization aims to help children understand the value of perseverance and self-efficacy to achieve success.
Partnerships and Support
Kitchen Possible has partnered with prominent groups, such as GE Appliances and local restaurants, to enhance its programs and reach. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kitchen Possible faced challenges in ensuring equitable access for all students, leading to partnerships like the one with GE Appliances, which donated appliances to participant families, facilitating virtual classes and at-home cooking experiences.
Financial Overview
Kitchen Possible primarily relies on contributions for its revenue, with no other notable income streams such as program services or investment income. As of the fiscal year ending in 2022, the organization had $174,722 in total assets and no liabilities.
Leadership and Recognition
Katie Lowman serves as the President of Kitchen Possible, and the organization has received support from various community initiatives and events, including being a charity partner for Chicago Restaurant Week's First Bites Bash.
