Izaak Walton League of America
102 years of conservation leadership. Mission: protect the nation's woods, waters and wildlife. For the last 80 years, the Izaak Walton League, a national conservation organization, has been addressing a broad range of issues affecting our nation's wildlife and natural resources. We work to educate decision-makers and the public through our national program staff and through our 50,000 members and supporters that are organized through 300+ community-based, volunteer chapters and state-level divisions. Our goal is to ensure that America's natural resource base is protected, managed and used to assure the quality of life in the long run. We accomplish this by emphasizing the hands-on role that individuals can play in habitat protection and restoration as well as through their local legislatures. Our current national conservation work includes staffed programs on public lands management, wetlands and clean water policy, sustainable agriculture and forestry, energy efficiency, clean air, citizen stream and wetland monitoring and restoration education, responsible outdoor behavior.

Izaak Walton League of America
The Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) is a prominent U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting conservation and protecting America's natural resources. Founded in 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, by fifty-four fishing enthusiasts and outdoor advocates, the league was named after the seventeenth-century British angler and author Izaak Walton, famous for his book The Compleat Angler.
History
Initially focused on preserving fishing habitats, the IWLA expanded its mission to protect all natural wildlife and habitats. This shift was driven by concerns about water pollution and the need for effective conservation practices. In its early years, the league experienced rapid growth, boasting over 100,000 supporters by 1924 due to the expertise of its founders, many of whom were in advertising and business[1].
Conservation Efforts
The IWLA has been instrumental in several landmark conservation efforts:
- Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge: The League championed the establishment of this refuge in 1924, protecting a crucial wildlife habitat along 261 miles of the river in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois[2].
- Water Pollution Surveys and Legislation: In 1927, the IWLA conducted a national water pollution survey, which revealed that three-quarters of U.S. waters were polluted. This effort laid groundwork for future legislation, including the Clean Water Act of 1972[2].
- Sustainable Farming Practices: The League has promoted sustainable agriculture through initiatives like the Conservation Reserve Program and advocacy against harmful chemicals such as DDT[2].
- National Conservation Initiatives: IWLA members played a role in establishing nonpartisan state game commissions and municipal wastewater treatment facilities[4].
Mission and Vision
The mission of the Izaak Walton League of America is to conserve, restore, and promote the sustainable use and enjoyment of natural resources, including soil, air, woods, waters, and wildlife[5]. The League's vision includes fostering grassroots conservation efforts, advocating for policy changes, and engaging communities in outdoor recreation to ensure a high quality of life for future generations[3].
Programs and Structures
The organization operates various programs such as Save Our Streams, Salt Watch, and Nitrate Watch, which help monitor and safeguard water quality across the U.S.[2]. It has more than 200 local chapters and operates in multiple states, providing opportunities for outdoor education and conservation activities[5].
Membership and Impact
With a diverse membership of around 50,000 individuals, the Izaak Walton League of America remains a vital voice in U.S. environmental conservation, contributing to numerous national policies and initiatives that protect public health and natural resources[4][5]. The League's impact spans from local stream restoration to influencing federal legislation, positioning it as a leading force in American environmental stewardship.
