Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry
Introduction

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry (BBBSL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in South Carolina, serving Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties. It operates independently with its own local Board of Directors and was founded in February 2019, having previously been a program of the Carolina Youth Development Center for several decades.

Mission and Programs

BBBSL's mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. The organization believes that every child has incredible potential and works to create positive relationships between adult volunteers ("Bigs") and children ("Littles") aged 7 through high school graduation. BBBSL offers two primary programs:

  • Community-Based Program: This is BBBSL's hallmark mentoring program, focusing on a one-to-one relationship between Bigs and Littles.
  • BIG Beyond Scholar Program: A curriculum-guided program aimed at high school career and college readiness.
Impact and Goals

BBBSL aims to help young people achieve their full potential by providing opportunities for educational success, building confidence, and promoting better relationships. The organization is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that all youth can reach their full potential regardless of their background.

Financial Overview

As a nonprofit, BBBSL relies heavily on contributions, with these donations being tax-deductible. The organization's financial data, as reported in its Form 990 filings, shows that contributions make up the majority of its revenue, followed by smaller amounts from other revenue sources like net fundraising and other income.

Structure and Governance

BBBSL is governed by a local Board of Directors, which oversees its operations. The organization is part of the broader Big Brothers Big Sisters network but operates independently in its service area.

Tax Information

BBBSL has the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 83-3554712 and became tax-exempt in August 2019.
