National Society Daughters of the American Revolution

Overview

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (often abbreviated as DAR or NSDAR) is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a patriot of the American Revolutionary War. Founded on October 11, 1890, in Washington, D.C., it aims to promote historic preservation, education, patriotism, and community service.

Founding and History

The DAR was established by four women: Mary Smith Lockwood, Eugenia Washington, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Mary Desha. The organization was formed after women were excluded from joining the Sons of the American Revolution, leading to a separate society for women. The DAR's first meeting was held on August 9, 1890, and it officially began on October 11, 1890, at Strathmore Arms.

Membership and Activities

To become a member, applicants must be at least 18 years old and provide documentation proving direct descent from an American Revolutionary War patriot. The organization has over 190,000 members worldwide and supports various educational, historic, and community-based initiatives.

Additionally, the DAR provides scholarships and support to Native American youth at institutions like Chemawa Indian School and Bacone College.

  • Providing over 200,000 hours of volunteer service annually to veterans
  • Supporting troops in international conflicts
  • Promoting the Constitution during Constitution Week
  • Participating in naturalization ceremonies

Exhibits and Library

The DAR maintains a comprehensive genealogical library at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., offering resources for family history research. The library and bookstore feature extensive collections of United States and women's history materials.

Motto and Publications

The DAR's motto is "God, Home, and Country." The organization publishes American Spirit Magazine and Daughters Magazine, previously known as American Monthly from 1892 to 2001.

Conclusion

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is dedicated to preserving American history, supporting education, and fostering community service, while celebrating the heritage of its members.
