THE SUNSET PROJECT IS COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN THE BETTERMENT OF NORTHEAST MICHIGAN THROUGH CREATIVE-BASED AND MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS.

The Sunset Project

The Sunset Project is a U.S. nonprofit organization with a mission to invest in the betterment of Northeast Michigan through creative-based and mental health programs. It was founded in 2021 by three lifelong friends following the loss of their friend, Sawyer Boyd. The organization operates as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Mission and Focus

The Sunset Project is committed to enhancing the quality of life in Northeast Michigan by fostering creativity and addressing mental health issues. It focuses on several key areas, including supporting aspiring youth, developing community projects, and promoting mental health awareness.

Programs
  1. The Sawyer J. Boyd Creatives Grant: This initiative provides grants to aspiring youth aged 16 to 23 to support their creative interests, whether they are hobbies or career pursuits.
  2. FOCUS45: A community investment program focused on the development and support of creative-based projects that benefit Northeast Michigan. This program is the framework under which initiatives like the Sanctuary Selections Film Competition operate.
  3. Northeast Michigan Wellness Initiative (NEMWI): This program aims to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health through in-school programs and community events.
Collaborations and Events

The Sunset Project collaborates with other organizations, such as the Thunder Bay International Film Festival, to host events like the Sanctuary Selections Film Competition. This competition provides a platform for filmmakers from the Great Lakes region to showcase their work and compete for a $5,000 prize to support future projects.

Support and Impact

The organization's efforts are supported by grants and programs funded by bodies like the Michigan Arts & Culture Council and Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Its work is directed towards creating a vibrant and supportive community in Northeast Michigan, focusing on both creative and mental health initiatives.
