Zion Astro Soccer Club

Zion Astro Soccer Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to youth soccer development and education, operating primarily in Columbus, Ohio, and Liberia, West Africa. Founded to provide equal opportunities for children aged 6 to 14, the club offers affordable soccer programs aimed at developing technical skills, fostering passion for the sport, and promoting personal growth through a comprehensive, holistic approach to training.

History and Mission

The organization was founded by Eugene Harmon, who grew up playing street soccer in Monrovia, Liberia. After relocating to the United States for higher education, Harmon pursued a career in IT but maintained a commitment to giving back to his communities through soccer. In 2017, he started Columbus Astro Soccer Club in Ohio, and in 2019, he founded the Zion Astro Football Academy in Liberia to mentor young players remotely. In 2021, these two programs officially merged under the single name Zion Astro FC to streamline efforts and impact[3].

Zion Astro Soccer Club emphasizes not only athletic excellence but also education and life skills. Its programming encourages players to express themselves freely on the field, nurtures talents from disadvantaged backgrounds, and promotes social awareness and gender equity through sports. The club is also involved in fundraising initiatives to support educational opportunities for youth, exemplified by its "Score for Education Movement"[1][3].

Programs and Activities

The club offers year-round and seasonal soccer sessions designed for children between 6 and 14 years old, with minimal fees to ensure accessibility. It operates in both Columbus, Ohio, and Liberia, with cultural exchange opportunities facilitated through virtual meetings, allowing players to connect internationally. Programs include technical skill development, summer camps, and mentorship opportunities[1][4][5].

Governance and Leadership

Zion Astro Soccer Club is governed by a board of directors that includes sports management professionals and community leaders. The board undertakes formal orientation for new members, maintains policies on ethics and transparency, and conducts self-assessments of its performance. While the board has not conducted a formal written assessment of the CEO in the past year, it promotes inclusive recruitment to ensure diversity in leadership[2].

Impact

By blending soccer training with educational initiatives, Zion Astro Soccer Club seeks to empower youth both on and off the field. It strives to create a positive, supportive environment that helps children realize their full potential regardless of financial background. The organization’s founder personally funds much of the program’s operations, demonstrating a strong commitment to the cause[1][3].

Zion Astro Soccer Club stands as a notable example of a sports-focused nonprofit bridging communities across continents to inspire youth development through athletics and education.
