Can simple blood tests help monitor liver damage in Wilson disease? At EASL Congress2025, Zoe Marino shared encouraging new research using data from patients in our Wilson Disease Registry, as well as centers in Barcelona and Aarhus. The study looked at several non-invasive tests—including basic blood work and liver scans—to see how well they could detect advanced liver scarring or fibrosis in people with Wilson disease. Two of the blood tests (called SAFE and APRI) were especially helpful at ruling out serious liver damage. “We think it will be useful. We are also exploring non-invasive evaluation for fatty change in the liver often seen in WD earlier on.” – Michael Schilsky, co-author. These tools could help doctors track liver health over time without needing a liverbiopsy, and may also be useful in monitoring treatment and predicting long-term outcomes. #liverdisease #raredisease #easl2025_amsterdam (fb)
