A small-scale prescribed fire is underway TODAY, Wednesday, May 21. It will cover a 0.3-acre section of the Longleaf Sandhill Pine area of the Garden.  The Garden will remain open, however, this area and the Nottingham and Pennsylvania Ave. entrances will be closed for the day.   Prescribed burns, which are supervised by a certified burn boss and fire team, are beneficial for keeping our restored sand hill habitats healthy. Don’t be alarmed if you see or smell smoke coming from the Garden tomorrow, May 21st. Weather conditions permitting, a 0.3-acre prescribed fire in the Longleaf Sandhill Pine area is planned. This section of the Garden and the Nottingham and Pennsylvania Avenue entrances will be closed during the event.     Prescribed burns, which are supervised by a certified burn boss and fire team, are beneficial for keeping our restored Sandhill habitats healthy. Much prep work was completed by members of the Tarflower Chapter of the Native Plant Society, including debris removal and clearing at the base of trees. The area will be walked prior to the burn to ensure birds, rabbits and other wildlife have departed or taken cover in the gopher tortoise burrows.
