Overview
The Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc. is a regional branch of the Girl Scouts of the USA, serving girls in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Founded in 1923, it has evolved over the years to become a key organization in developing leadership skills among young girls in South Florida.
History
The first Girl Scout troop in Miami-Dade County was established in 1923, specifically with the formation of Alligator Troop 1 in Coconut Grove. This marked the beginning of the Girl Scouts movement in the area. By 1929, the Girl Scout Council of Dade County was officially founded by Judge Edith M. Atkinson. In 1963, the council merged with the Florida Keys Girl Scout Council to form the Girl Scouts Council of Tropical Florida, Inc.
Mission
The council's mission aligns with the national Girl Scouts of the USA, which is to "build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place." This is achieved through a variety of programs that focus on experiential learning, leadership development, and community service.
Programs and Initiatives
The Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida offers a range of programs designed to cater to the diverse needs and interests of girls across the region. Key initiatives include:
- Transformational Leadership Experience: This includes activities such as coding, advocacy, climate change awareness, and entrepreneurship.
- Community Troops: A program established over 30 years ago to ensure inclusivity by providing subsidized access to leadership development for girls from underrepresented communities.
- Outdoor Activities: Access to camps like Camp Mahachee, which provide opportunities for girls to engage in nature-based activities and build important life skills.
Impact
Since its inception, the council has served over half a million girls in the region, contributing to the development of strong female leaders and community stewards. The organization remains committed to empowering girls to become agents of positive change in their communities and beyond.
Centennial Celebrations
In 2023, the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida marked its centennial anniversary with various community activities, including exhibitions, community service projects, and special events to honor local alumni and leaders.
