The organization holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and participates in the World Health Organization's Violence Prevention Alliance.

History

The Center's foundational roots began in 1988 as the "Center for Global Nonviolence Planning Project," established at the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, University of Hawai‘i. Professor Glenn D. Paige, a Korean War veteran and peace advocate, initiated this project. The Center for Global Nonviolence was formally established as an independent nonprofit in 1994, focusing on research and networking. Key milestones include the publication of Nonkilling Global Political Science in 2002 and the First Global Nonkilling Leadership Forum in 2007.

It achieves this by discovering and encouraging global nonkilling human capabilities, introducing nonkilling knowledge in global education and policy, applying nonkilling knowledge in problem-solving, developing nonkilling global leadership, assisting institutions focused on nonkilling, and measuring the impact of nonkilling global efforts.

Leadership and Governance

The organization is governed by a chairperson and a governing council. Notable leaders include Glenn D. Paige, who served as the founder and first chair. Other prominent figures supporting the organization include Nobel Peace Laureates and civil rights activists like Máiread Corrigan Maguire and Bernard Lafayette Jr.

  • Publications and Media: Produces working papers, articles, and books on nonkilling themes.
  • Monitoring and Advocacy: Actively participates at the United Nations to promote nonkilling policies.
  • Education and Training: Develops educational materials for schools and universities to integrate nonkilling concepts.
  • Research Programs: Conducts seminars and colloquia through research committees to advance nonkilling research.
Initiatives and Outcomes

Additionally, the Center supports the establishment of a Global Nonkilling Leadership Academy aimed at developing leaders committed to nonkilling principles.
