Antique Airplane Association

The Antique Airplane Association (AAA) is the oldest antique airplane association in the world, formed in August 1953 by Robert L. Taylor. Its primary mission is to "Keep the Antiques Flying" by supporting the owners, restorers, and pilots of antique and classic aircraft.

History

The AAA was founded by Robert L. Taylor, who used a classified ad in Flying magazine to gather interest. At the time of its inception, no other organization existed specifically for antique and classic airplanes. In the late 1950s, the AAA was incorporated by Ken Cook, who served as its vice president. Cook published the AAA News, which was later renamed American Airman magazine before he withdrew from the association in 1961. In 1970, the AAA became a non-profit corporation in the state of Iowa.

Mission and Activities

The AAA is dedicated to preserving and flying vintage aircraft. It operates from Antique Airfield in Blakesburg, Iowa, serving as headquarters for its 50 chapter organizations and over 7,000 members worldwide. The association provides its members with aviation history insights, networking opportunities, and advocacy on behalf of antique aircraft owners.

Accomplishments

• Regulatory Advocacy: The AAA has been instrumental in changing regulations concerning antique aircraft. In the 1960s, the AAA successfully lobbied for changes in registration markings for antique and classic aircraft.
• Technical Guidance: As a member of the National FAA Aging Aircraft Ad-Hoc Committee, the AAA contributed to drafting AC 23-27, which addresses parts and materials substitution for vintage aircraft.
• Legal Milestones: The AAA was involved in the landmark Supreme Court case Taylor v. Sturgell, which secured access to FAA-approved data and drawings for antique and classic aircraft.

Membership and Programs

Membership benefits include access to the AAA/APM Invitational Fly-in, insurance programs for aircraft and life, the Antique Airfield Runway publication, monthly updates via "Brent's Blast," a technical library, and a network of knowledgeable members. The AAA also advocates for antique aircraft owners and supports aviation's Golden Age through various activities.

Relationship with Airpower Museum

The AAA works closely with the Airpower Museum, Inc. (APM), although they are separate organizations. While they share a common cause in historical aviation, they maintain distinct legal and financial structures to avoid potential conflicts and ensure compliance with regulations.
