Unlike service animals, which are trained for specific tasks and covered by the American Disabilities Act (ADA), ESAs are used primarily for emotional support and do not require specialized training. Any animal can serve as an ESA, depending on personal preference, and a letter from a licensed healthcare professional is required to certify the need for such an animal.
