Henry L. Ferguson Museum
Overview
The Henry L. Ferguson Museum is a U.S. nonprofit organization located on Fishers Island, New York. It is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of items related to the prehistory, history, and natural history of the island, as well as the preservation of its natural environment through its Land Trust.
History
The museum was founded in 1960 in honor of Henry Lee Ferguson, a man who spent his life involved in the civic and business affairs of Fishers Island. Henry L. Ferguson was born on March 28, 1881, in Fairfield, Connecticut. His father and uncle purchased Fishers Island in 1889 with the intention of developing it as a seasonal resort. Growing up on the island, Ferguson developed a keen interest in its history and wildlife. He began collecting bird species in 1912 and Native American artifacts shortly thereafter, conducting archaeological excavations on the island starting in 1929[2][3].
The museum itself was dedicated in 1961 and houses a variety of birds, archaeological artifacts collected by Ferguson, and artifacts from more recent excavations[2].
Collections and Exhibitions
The museum features three main galleries focusing on the archaeology, natural history, and history of Fishers Island. It hosts annual exhibitions and special exhibits, providing a platform for educational and community engagement. The museum also offers virtual exhibits and photo galleries for broader accessibility[1][5].
Land Trust
The Land Trust of the Henry L. Ferguson Museum was established following a proposal by H. Lee Ferguson, Jr. in 1965 to create wildlife sanctuaries on the island. After his untimely death, the Board established the H. Lee Ferguson, Jr. Wildlife Sanctuary in his memory. Over the years, the Land Trust has expanded significantly through donations of land, now protecting more than 377 acres of Fishers Island. These areas are preserved as wildlife sanctuaries, with trails maintained for public enjoyment while ensuring minimal impact on the natural habitat[3].
Programs and Activities
The museum offers a range of programs, including children's activities in partnership with local educational institutions, nature walks, and lectures. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of the island's history, natural environment, and the importance of conservation among both locals and visitors[1][5].
Mission
The mission of the Henry L. Ferguson Museum is to promote education and enjoyment of Fishers Island's rich history and natural assets, while preserving its environment for future generations.
