MN Wild Sled Hockey Program

The MN Wild Sled Hockey Program is a nonprofit organization based in Minnesota, committed to providing opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities to participate in sled hockey. It operates as a 501(c)(3) corporation, aligned with the mission of promoting inclusivity and excellence in the sport for people with disabilities.

Mission and Purpose

The organization aims to enrich the lives of athletes with physical disabilities by offering them a platform to engage in sled hockey, a fast-paced ice sport that involves propelling sleds with specialized sticks equipped with ice picks. This sport is highly regarded in the Paralympic Games, requiring athletes to wear full hockey protective gear due to the contact nature of the game.

Affiliation and Collaborations

The MN Wild Sled Hockey Program is affiliated with the Minnesota Wild and collaborates closely with the Minnesota Sled Hockey Association. The association supports teams in various locations throughout Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, Rochester, and Moorhead.

Accessibility and Promotions

To increase accessibility, the program often offers incentives for new players, such as waiving team registration fees for first-year participants. This initiative encourages more individuals to engage with the sport and fosters the development of sled hockey across the region.

Impact and Recognition

Sled hockey has gained significant recognition in the United States following the country's consecutive gold medal wins in the Paralympic Games. Through its efforts, the MN Wild Sled Hockey Program contributes to the national momentum behind this adaptive sport, promoting both physical activity and social integration for athletes with disabilities.

Home Our Teams Our Board Board Minutes NewsPhotos More Minnesota Sled Hockey Association Sled hockey also referred to as sledge hockey and para ice hockey was invented at a Stockholm Sweden rehabilitation center in the early 196039s by a group of Swedes who despite their physical disability wanted to continue playing hockey. It was introduced at the Lillehammer 1994 Winter Games and the US won its first Paralympic medal in the sport gold medal at the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Games. Sled hockey follows most of the typical ice hockey rules except for some of the equipment. Players sit in specially designed sleds that sit on top of two hockey skate blades.
