Transformation through learning non-violence, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, understanding victim impact. IG: grip_training_institute THE GRIP TRAINING INSTITUTE IS A COMMUNITY-BASED NON-PROFIT SERVING INCARCERATED AND FORMERLY INCARCERATED PEOPLE AND THOSE WHO HAVE SURVIVED VIOLENCE. GRIP STANDS FOR GUIDING RAGE INTO POWER, WHICH IS THE NAME OF OUR FLAGSHIP PROGRAM, AN EVIDENCE-BASED METHODOLOGY DEVELOPED OVER 25 YEARS OF WORK WITH THOUSANDS OF INCARCERATED PEOPLE AND MANY VICTIMS/SURVIVORS. ROOTED IN RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PRINCIPLES, THE PROGRAM'S TRAUMA-INFORMED MODEL INTEGRATES CUTTING-EDGE NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH. STUDENTS ENGAGE IN A YEARLONG, IN-DEPTH JOURNEY TO COMPREHEND THE ORIGINS OF THEIR VIOLENCE AND DEVELOP SKILLS TO TRACK AND MANAGE STRONG IMPULSES RATHER THAN ACTING OUT IN HARMFUL WAYS. THEY TRANSFORM DESTRUCTIVE BELIEFS AND BEHAVIORS INTO AN ATTITUDE OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE THAT PREVENTS RE-VICTIMIZATION.

Grip Training Institute

The Grip Training Institute, previously known as Insight-Out, is a U.S. nonprofit organization based in California, designated as a 501(c)(3) entity. It serves incarcerated individuals in California and focuses on providing a transformative program rooted in restorative justice principles.

Mission and Programs

The institute's mission is to transform violence and suffering into opportunities for learning and healing. Its flagship program, Guiding Rage Into Power (GRIP), is an evidence-based methodology developed over two decades. GRIP offers a one-year intensive program that guides participants through a journey of deep transformation and accountability. The program emphasizes mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and understanding victim impact, helping individuals recognize and manage their impulses and behaviors.

History and Expansion

Founded by Jacques Verduin, GRIP began in 2012 at San Quentin State Prison. Over the years, it has expanded to multiple institutions across California, including a women's prison. As of recent updates, GRIP has graduated over 1,500 students, with a significantly low recidivism rate compared to national averages.

Advocacy and Re-Entry

The organization engages in advocacy efforts aimed at promoting restorative justice and supporting the re-entry of formerly incarcerated individuals into society. GRIP's activism includes lobbying for "earned release" of life-sentenced prisoners who have demonstrated personal transformation and commitment to rehabilitation.

Financial Overview

Financially, the organization relies heavily on contributions for its operations. In recent fiscal years, contributions have accounted for nearly the entirety of its revenue, with significant portions dedicated to salaries and wages for program delivery.

Impact

The GRIP Training Institute has been recognized for its innovative approach to rehabilitation, fostering a supportive community environment and promoting healing through mindfulness and self-reflection. Its low recidivism rate underscores its effectiveness in transforming violent behaviors into prosocial attitudes.
