Alhambra Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church

Overview

The Alhambra Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church is a multicultural and inclusive religious organization based in Alhambra, California. It is part of the United Methodist Church network and is known for its diverse community and commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

History

The church's history began with the foundation of the San Gabriel Valley Japanese Methodist Church by Rev. Jutaro Yokoi in the early 1930s. During the Great Depression, Rev. Yokoi and his wife, Sophia Minnie Sage Yokoi, started a Sunday school for Japanese-American children in El Monte, California. After Sophia's passing in 1941, Rev. Yokoi continued his ministry despite facing personal challenges, including internment during World War II. The church was later renamed Sage Memorial Methodist Church in her honor in 1961.

In the 1990s, the congregation moved several times due to changing needs and eventually merged with the Granada Park United Methodist Church in 1998. This merger resulted in the creation of the Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church, fostering a unified and diverse community.

Mission and Activities

The church is dedicated to spreading God's love through Jesus Christ and embracing its multicultural heritage. It offers various opportunities for worship, personal growth, and community engagement. The congregation values inclusivity and provides a welcoming environment for people from different backgrounds.

Cultural Significance

One notable feature of the church is its historic stained glass window depicting Jesus holding a lamb. This window was gifted by the First UMC of El Monte in 1957 and represents a significant part of the church's historical journey. Efforts are being made to restore and permanently display this stained glass window, symbolizing the enduring connection to the church's past and its commitment to its heritage.

Community Impact

With an attendance of approximately 110 members, the church continues to serve its local community through worship services and other community activities. Its focus on multiculturalism and inclusivity helps foster a sense of belonging among its members, making it a unique and valuable presence in Alhambra.
