Certification Process

These exams are given every two years and require candidates to have completed at least two years in an ABMGG-accredited training program. For those pursuing clinical genetics and a laboratory specialty, three years of training are necessary.

Accreditation of Training Programs

Until the end of 2023, ABMGG accredited laboratory training programs. However, starting in 2018, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) began taking over the accreditation responsibilities for laboratory fellowships in clinical biochemical genetics and laboratory genetics and genomics.

The ABMGG is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) as one of its 24 member boards. This recognition underlines the organization's role in maintaining the standards of medical genetics and genomics.
