The primary mission of the Global Surgery Student Alliance (GSSA) is to connect medical students across the U.S. to global surgery opportunities, foster a robust global surgery community, and strive for sustainable, equitable, and accessible surgical, obstetric, and anesthesia care worldwide. • Creating Awareness and Advocacy: To raise awareness about global surgery and advocate for its advancement.

• Research Advancement: To advance research in global surgery by involving students.
• Networking and Mentorship: To connect interested students nationwide and globally, facilitating communication and mentorship between students and current global surgeons, OB/Gyns, and anesthesiologists.
• Career Development: To foster the development of the next generation of global surgeons, OB/Gyns, and anesthesiologists.

Structure and Activities

GSSA functions through a national leadership team and local chapters. The organization has over 1500 students and residents participating across multiple U.S. medical institutions. It hosts events, publishes educational materials, and releases an annual report to detail its activities and progress.

Educational Initiatives

The organization provides a global surgery curriculum designed for medical students, residents, and young physicians. This curriculum aims to inspire and educate future professionals in global surgery, including topics such as healthcare systems, cultural sensitivity, capacity building, and needs assessment. The curriculum is supported by external funding, notably from the Darwin Project, Inc., a non-profit organization focused on early childhood health and education.
