The Snake River Alliance Education Fund Inc.
Overview
The Snake River Alliance Education Fund Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to issues involving nuclear activities and clean energy in Idaho. It operates under the umbrella of the Snake River Alliance, which has been active since its founding in 1979. The organization is classified as a 501(c)(3) charitable entity.
History
The Snake River Alliance was established shortly after the Three Mile Island Incident in 1979, following the discovery of hazardous waste dumping into the Snake River Aquifer by the Idaho National Laboratory. The Alliance successfully campaigned to stop this practice, achieving a victory in 1987. Since then, its focus has expanded to include promoting clean energy alternatives and protecting Idaho from nuclear waste.
Mission
The Snake River Alliance Education Fund Inc. works to raise community awareness about the dangers of nuclear waste, weapons, and power while promoting sustainable energy alternatives. It serves as a watchdog group, monitoring activities at the Idaho National Laboratory to ensure the cleanup of existing contamination and preventing future nuclear projects in Idaho. The organization advocates for a nuclear-free future and supports the development of renewable energy sources.
Key Initiatives
- Nuclear Waste Protection: The Alliance actively opposes the shipment of nuclear waste into Idaho and has challenged proposals to build new nuclear facilities within the state.
- Clean Energy Promotion: In 2004, the organization began advocating for clean energy alternatives. Notable initiatives include the "Solarize the Valley" program, which helped over 120 families install solar panels and invested over $2.5 million in the local economy.
- Energy Policy Advocacy: The Snake River Alliance supports policies that encourage the transition away from coal and towards renewable energy sources. It has contributed to state-level energy planning and helped block proposals for new coal plants.
Governance
The organization is led by a diverse board of directors who oversee its governance and strategic direction. The Alliance is committed to practices that ensure equity and transparency within its leadership and operations.
Membership and Support
The Snake River Alliance encourages community engagement and invites individuals to join in advocating for a cleaner, more equitable energy future for Idaho.

WE INSPIRE WE EDUCATE WE ADVOCATE IDAHOS NUCLEAR WATCHDOG CLEAN ENERGY CHAMPION Snake River Alliance works to protect Idahos people environment and economy from the adverse impacts of nuclear activities while promoting a clean renewable energy future for all Idahoans. We embrace an energy future that addresses climate change in a clean cost effective and equitable manner leaving future generations free of the nuclear waste burden. We are Idahos fiercest advocate for a nuclearfree future. Left unchecked the federal government all too often treats Idaho as a nuclear dumping groundburying thousands of leaking barrels of nuclear waste in shallow pits and intentionally pumping billions of gallons of the most lethal nuclear sludge directly into Idahos groundwater.
