Masterworks Chorale Society

Overview

Masterworks Chorale Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the cultural fabric of the San Francisco Bay Area through exceptional performances of sacred and secular choral music. The organization operates under the name Masterworks Chorale and is recognized as one of Northern California's finest choral ensembles.

History

Masterworks Chorale was founded in 1964 by Galen Marshall as the San Mateo College Community Chorus. Over the years, it evolved into a thriving community chorus known today as Masterworks Chorale. The ensemble underwent significant growth under Marshall's direction, gradually expanding its performances throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1972, the group was officially renamed Masterworks Chorale, marking a turning point with its first complete performance of Handel's Messiah in December of that year. By May 1985, it became a self-sufficient nonprofit organization.

Performances and Collaborations

Masterworks Chorale is renowned for its diverse repertoire, ranging from Baroque to modern masterpieces. Each season, the ensemble performs four concert sets, including major choral works accompanied by professional orchestras and renowned soloists. Notable collaborations include performances with the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, and participation in prestigious festivals like the Cabrillo Festival.

Community Outreach and Education

In addition to its performances, Masterworks Chorale is deeply committed to community outreach. The ensemble operates several programs aimed at enriching the lives of diverse audiences:

  • Sing Out: Focused on under-served children.
  • Song Partners: Supports older adults coping with memory loss.
  • Feel the Music: Engages children in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
  • Paint the Music: Offers inclusive experiences for everyone.
  • Pocket Choir: Performs at schools, hospitals, community centers, and eldercare facilities.

Accolades and Recognition

Masterworks Chorale has garnered several notable awards, including the Diamond Award from the Peninsula Arts Council and Best of the Bay awards from San Francisco Classical Voice. These recognitions highlight the ensemble's artistic excellence and its contribution to the arts in Northern California.

Chamber Ensemble and Inclusive Nature

Masterworks Chorale also features a chamber ensemble known as Serenade, which performs in intimate settings, further showcasing the group's versatility. The organization fosters a diverse, friendly, and supportive environment among its members, promoting musical excellence and personal enjoyment through singing.

Leadership

The Chorale is currently conducted by Dr. Bryan Baker, under whose leadership the ensemble has continued to flourish and expand its repertoire, including commissioning new works by acclaimed composers.
